This is a quick before and after of Ship Island, off the coast of Gulfport. In the top pic, there is a cut created by Hurricane Camille in '69. Katrina widened that cut by three times the distance. There is also a second cut on the eastern tip of West Ship Island. From a boat, that new cut looks navigable by a shallow draft boat. East Ship Island is almost completely gone. These images courtesy of NASA's ASTER remote sensing device aboard the Terra satellite.

UNBELIEVABLE! Thanks Mike.
Have you heard anything from the Park Service on their plans for the island?
Here's what may be a stupid question - when you toured the barrier islands, did you see anything that looked like debris from the mainland?
thanks.

It's a story I wrote on the island. I also wrote about Horn Island, but it didn't get posted yet.
There was lots of debris. From dead animals to bags of Tyson chicken. Whole boats washed up on the southern shore, though no oil or tar balls.

thanks.
really good article. being familiar with the area, was able to visualize most of it.
Only problem - NOT good reading over a lunch break - as I am now on. Sheesh!
One last Q - and I am afraid I already know the answer - but is there any type of 'recovery' going on in the gulf waters for victims?

So. . . Rita. I hope she's not heading your way. Please be careful, guys. Come up here to Missouri--nothing happens here except the occasional tornado. Well, floods, too. Ok never mind.
