As an aside to the story of the Senators described below, while in front of the library, one of them, I believe it was Senator Reid, finds this DVD of "the Perfect Storm" buried in the mud. So he picks it up, starts brushing off the mud and showing it to his buddies. He was obviously very proud of his "meaningful" find. So I walk up behind him, tug his sleeve and say, "Hey dude, you might want to go wash your hands off. There's funky stuff in this mud." And he gives me a look that is halfway between confusion and anger.
On a side note: I hate national TV media. Well, specifically, I hate the scum bags from NBC who nearly ran me off the road in my KIA with their giant rental van because they were upset about losing their place in line behind the bus. First off, they were dressed (and smelled) like drunken frat boys. Second, they had no respect for the place.
I wish a curse on all the parachutring-in journalists who care not for the people who stay behind while they return to their comfy hotel rooms or clean, well-lit homes.
Finally, Senator Frist isn't as tall as I thought he was.

And this is why I love you guys - in spite of your irreverent humor, crass language and occasional digressions - YOU GET IT! (btw, I like the humor, language & digressions)
This catastrophe is about people and the evidence of their lives spread across the coastline. The coastal counties are, in a sense, sacred ground. How dare they disrespect this place and her people? The vast majority of news media cannot even begin to conceptualize the human aspect involved here. National media is over-sensationalized and doesn’t come close to conveying the reality that is now South Mississippi.
thank you!

Thank you for doing some real journalism...I have avoided the national stations since the start, and am probably better for it.

I have read this blog every day. You make me laugh and cry in a way that the national stations can't. Thank you for your tireless, REAL efforts to help us all understand. What you're doing there is important.

from the news capital of america, known to other, lesser newsmen as Strong Island...

covering local kids' bus trips to bring school supplies to south louisiana is infinitely cooler than talking shit to the senate minority leader, deflating that bewrinkled ego of his with a reminder of what it's like to not get coptered out of hell after a day's field trip.

if you see him again, you should say you can tell he's "emoting" insincerely. not like his usual heartfelt rants from the capitol steps, which inspire such feeling and confidence in us all.

rock rock on boys.

with love,

Finally able to see your photos in England! Did not get this covered by the news here, still lots in the UK media, but not this one. Keep up the good work - enjoy the insights into your thinking.

It's hard to imagine what folks who went through this are feeling. There's so many displaced. And I agree with you about the arrogance of the politicians and the large media, ie CNN, NBC, etc. They could care less. They won't be affected by these catastrophes, or by the resulting rise in gas prices. Let the common person suffer.
Kudos for not punching the idiot who somehow got elected to "serve" the people!
Good luck to you,
Cie
