08:42 a.m. CDT
Just got back from a morning run with one of the Knight Ridder photogs. We made it down to the beach at Cowan Rd. Apartment complexes were torn to shreds and the Fun Time amusement park doesn't exist anymore. The smell of gas is thick in the neighborhoods.
Saw National Guard trucks rolling into town and Red Cross just mobilized the largest recovery effort they have ever done. Lots of Long Beach has been destroyed. Point Cadet has been largely destroyed. Popps Ferry Bridge is shut down. The hurricane bent the steel part of it bad enough that it can't close all the way. Ocean Springs bridge is gone and I've heard that the Pass got hit very hard. I think their bridge is down, too. Pass Road is the only one that is drivable and it is barely that.
One of the reporters was just told her house is gone.
Josh was trying to head west to Long Beach to survey.

I have family along Three Rivers Rd that I have not be able to get ahold of. They live right of that road in Southern Oaks Trailor Park on Three Rivers Rd Right off of I-10 across or Seaway Rd right before Deodox Rd the street from the Cinimark movie theater and the Mall.

I just really want a damage report because it is a little more inland and if there is little damage I am sure that they are fine. But anything, Any kind of information would be great right about now.

The Ocean Springs bridge is gone? Gone? I am totally speechless.

My brother is at Keesler AFB and he told me last night that the hospital there had lost power after their generators were flooded and they were just scrambling to keep patients alive. They were moving patients into the hallways on the upper floors. He said he couldn't describe what things were like except that he felt like he was living out a scene from a disaster movie.

Please, anyone out there, donate to the Red Cross if you can. Water and supplies are desperately needed.

Not a comment but a question if you have time: there is a large concrete plant along the RR, somewhat to the East part of Gulfport, originally Blossman Concrete. The cement tank must have been 60-70 ft high. Is it still standing??

I used to live in the base housing just behind the hospital. My wife and I still have many friends in Biloxi and Gulfport. The level of destruction and the height of the storm surge just floored me.

Our hearts go out to everyone who has been in Katrina's path.

We can't do much to help from Illinois, but we will encourage our family and friends to send donations to the Red Cross.

anonymous: I have just spoken to someone who has driven around Ocean Springs. Damage to the downtown area is extensive. Many homes and apartment buildings along Front Beach have been completely destroyed. Gulf Park Estates also looks very bad.

Most of the homes north of 90 appeared to have come out okay. I wouldn't worry too much about Vancleave, except for maybe flooding and tree damage.

It seems like the media has forgotten about Pass Christian. I have family members that suvived the storm near St. Jude Church in Pineville on Evangeline road. they have not received any aide or help considering lack of media coverage or even mention of the Pass. If you have any info, then I would be most obliged.

About bayou View by the airport:

My sister lives at 53rd St. between Quincy and Kendall Aves, which very near the airport, and they were so lucky and had very little damage...a few trees down. I know there was some flooding from the Bayou and drainage canals/creeks, but I think it wasn't too bad for most people in that neighborhood.
